Sports & Activity Group Profiles: Ultimate Kickboxing

“A lot of people say you have to see the light at the end of the tunnel, but personally I believe the light comes from within.”

In the latest in our series of profiles of local sports clubs and activity groups, we pay a visit to Claremorris Ultimate Kickboxing Club to meet head coach Phelim Halligan and three of the club’s kickboxers.

Phelim talks about the important connection between sport and mental health, especially in a one-on-one training situation.

He also talks about the prospect of kickboxing becoming an Olympic event, and the rising popularity of the sport among young women: “The ladies are really flying the flag,” he says.

We also hear from club members Alex Halligan, Mikey Henry and James Kelly – all of them belt-winning kickboxers. They tell us what the sport, the training, and the fights have meant to them.
